One of the oldest surviving complete Roman mosaics dating from 1,700 years ago, a spectacular discovery made in Lod in Israel, will go on show at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, UK. The exhibition Predators and Prey: A Roman Mosaic from Lod, Israel is presented in association with the Israel Antiquities Authority and in collaboration with the British Museum, from 5 June – 2 November 2014.

oh no i’m thinking about that “cute music terms to name your kids” post and laughing about ii flat 6-4 fjffdjsuv
when you said you needed space
by all means call out john green on his bullshit don’t stand for one bit of it but while you’re at it don’t throw the 13 year old girls who read his books under the bus with him for crying over fictional boys and photoshopping flower crowns onto things and blogging about their social anxiety protect them at all fucking costs
so there are 5 books in The Dark Is Rising sequence and they’re about three siblings (boy/girl/boy) and this kid they know called Will and in the first book they hunt for the Holy Grail in a Cornwall village and their uncle turns out to be a kind of wizard and the sequence just goes from there and just gets more Arthurian (I adore Arthurian reinterpretations) and really creepy like none of your ”oh man? we’re gifted kids fighting dark magic? cool!” shit here, these are kids terrified and slightly traumatised by the freaky shit that happens
and i was so surrounded by objectivism and Catholic tradition as a kid that to have something that just didn’t fit with the paradigms of that, that was real Deep Magic (to borrow Lewis’ phrase), something that was not anything to do with my religion, but real humans-and-dark-magic folktale stuff, this was breathtaking.
I re-read them a couple of years ago and they were still mindbendingly good in their simplicity and brilliance.
Go & read them.
(warning: the first couple of books are more straightforward; it gets much darker and stranger from the 3rd book onward.)
